甲骨文“祐”一边是“示”，祭台；一边是“又”，一只手——一条长长的手臂上分出两根手指。卜辞里这个形体多读作“祐”，指神灵降下的佑助；也有学者把其中一些读作“侑”，一种请神享用祭品的祭祀。两读靠辞例分辨，以“祐”为常，所以这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。《说文》说“祐，助也，从示、右声”。

Oracle-bone 祐 sets 示, the altar post, beside 又, a hand — one long forearm with two fingers branching from it. Most readings take the graph as 祐, the help the spirits send; some take part of the set as 侑, the rite of inviting a spirit to eat the offering. The wording of the divination decides, and 祐 is the commoner reading, so the picture is graded probable. 《說文》 glosses 祐 as help, from 示 with 右 for sound.
