“陟”左右两半：一半是“阜”——一般认为是黄土坡上凿出的阶梯，刻成一串缺口；另一半是两个脚印（也就是“步”）。全字的意思就靠脚尖的方向：“陟”的脚尖朝上，是上坡；“降”的脚尖朝下，是下坡。两半谁在左谁在右并不固定，甲骨文两种都刻。《说文》说“陟，登也。从𨸏，从步”，和甲骨文字形正好吻合。

陟 has two halves. One is 阜, generally taken to be steps cut into a loess slope and carved as a row of notches; the other is two footprints, that is 步. The whole meaning rides on which way the toes point: up in 陟, for climbing, and down in 降, for coming down. Which half stands on the left is not fixed — both orders were carved. 說文's analysis, “陟 means to climb; from 𨸏 and 步”, matches the oracle-bone picture exactly.
