The character has two tiers. The lower one is 口, a mouth, and nobody argues about it; the argument is over the upper tier. One reading takes it for a shield — a squared board on a straight handle, which is how the Shang drew a shield — standing here for the sound alone, not for the sense. The other follows 說文: “古 is 故; it is made of 十 and 口, marking what was said before”, that is, old words passed down through ten mouths. 說文 is a Han explanation, not a Shang note, and the handled board in the graph looks little like the numeral ten. On the bones the character turns up in names of people and places, and is also read as 古 or 故.
