“亦”就是“大”（正面站着的人）加上两道指示符号：短撇点在腋下，指出腋窝，所以它是“腋”的本字。《说文》说“人之臂亦也，从大，象两亦之形”，和甲骨文字形正好对得上。后来这个字被借去当“也、同样”用，才另造“腋”。要和“大”分开，看腋下有没有那两道短撇。

The graph is 大, a person seen from the front, plus two pointing marks: the short strokes sit under the arms and single out the armpits, making 亦 the original graph of 腋. 說文 says as much — "the armpit of a person; from 大, picturing the two armpits" — and it matches the oracle shape exactly. The character was later borrowed for "also", and a new 腋 was made for the body part. To tell it from 大, look for the two short strokes under the arms.
