甲骨文“咸”是一把长柄大斧（“戌”）加一张“口”。“都、全”这个意思看不见、画不出来，所以一般认为是借“戌”“口”这两个形体来写“咸”这个词。《说文》说“咸，皆也，悉也。从口，从戌”。和“岁”比一比：两个字都从一把斧起手，“岁”在刃上多两道短画，“咸”在斧旁多一张嘴。

Oracle-bone 咸 is a long-hafted axe (戌) with a 口, a mouth, beside it. The sense 'all' cannot be pictured, so the graph is generally taken to borrow the axe and the mouth to write the word. 《說文》 glosses 咸 as all, entirely, from 口 and 戌. Set it beside 歲: both start from an axe, but 歲 adds short bars on the blade while 咸 adds a mouth at its side.
