外面那一笔就是上一个字“乃”，里面多了一只编出来的篮子。篮子管读音，不管意思：这是形声字的老办法，借一个同音的东西画进去，把两个读音相近的词分开。要说的是，这只篮子究竟该认作哪个字，两说并存：一说是“西”，《说文》讲“迺，惊声也。从乃省，西声”，就取这一说；一说是“卤”，装盐的筐。两说指的其实是同一批相似的字形，孰先孰后还没有定论，所以这里标作较可信。卜辞里“迺”专管接事：一件事做完，接着做第二件，用“迺”接上；“乃”多用来说“你的、他的”。两个字在一版上并见的时候分工清楚，但也有混用的例子。

The stroke on the outside is the character 乃 from earlier in this chapter; what is new is the woven basket inside it. The basket carries the sound and not the sense — the old method of the phonetic compound, in which a like-sounding thing is drawn in to keep two similar words apart. Which character the basket is meant to be is read two ways: as 西, the reading 說文 takes when it says “迺 is the sound of alarm; it follows a shortened 乃, with 西 as the sound”; or as 鹵, the pannier salt was carried in. The two readings are drawing on the same family of similar shapes, and which came first is unsettled, so the badge here says probable. On the bones 迺 does one job: it joins events, one thing done and then the next taken up, while 乃 mostly means “your, his”. Where both appear on one piece the division holds, though examples of the two being used for each other exist as well.
