这个字的办法和“甘”一样：拿一个现成的字（目），再加一道记号。加的这道笔是直的，指的就是“看得直”。要注意的是那道笔本身——它不画任何东西，只是把“直”这件事摆给你看，所以“直”从一开始就是一个抽象的字，不是一样可以拿在手里的东西。《说文》说“直，正見也。从𠃊，从十，从目”，把那一道拆成“十”，又添了一个“𠃊”，那是小篆字形变样以后的分析；甲骨上只有一只眼睛和一道直笔，干干净净。

The method here is the one used for 甘: take a ready-made character, 目 the eye, and add a mark. The mark added is straight, and what it points at is straight looking. Notice the mark itself — it draws nothing, it simply puts straightness in front of you, so 直 is an abstract character from the start and not a thing anyone could pick up. 說文 says “直 is seeing straight; from 𠃊, from 十 and from 目”, splitting the stroke into a ten and adding a hook; that analysis follows the small-seal shape after it had drifted. On the bones there is an eye and one straight stroke, and nothing else.
