《说文》说“宁，辨积物也。象形”——“辨”是分开，“积”是堆起来：这是一副把东西分开堆放的架子，字是照着架子画的。另有一说从后世的词义出发：“宁”在古书里还指门和屏之间的那块地方（人君立于宁），照这个意思，这个框画的就是立在门里的屏。两说不能都对，本条定为大致可信。本章要小心三个框：“凡”（glyph_raft_001）两柱上端向外张；“爿”（glyph_bedframe_001）只有一根长杆，横档短短地伸出去；“宁”两柱一样长，上下都探出横档之外，横档把中间隔成格。

說文 says “宁 is for sorting and piling goods; it is a picture” — 辨 is to keep apart, 積 is to heap up: a frame for stacking things in separate layers, and the character is drawn from the frame. A second account starts from a later sense of the word: in the old books 宁 is also the ground between a gate and the screen inside it, the place a ruler stood; on that reading the frame draws the screen. Both cannot be right, and we grade this probable. Three frames in this chapter need care: 凡 at glyph_raft_001 has posts that splay outward at the top; 爿 at glyph_bedframe_001 has only one long pole with short bars reaching from it; 宁 has two posts of the same length, both running past the bars at top and bottom, with the bars dividing the middle into compartments.
