“戊”本来画的是兵器，一柄装在长柄上的弯刃斧，和“戌”“戈”出自同一族字形。商人把这个字借来做十天干的第五位，只取它的读音，不再管它的刃。和“戌”分辨时看刃：“戊”的刃细长，贴着柄；“戌”的刃一般画得又宽又厚。

What 戊 draws is a weapon: a curved axe-blade mounted on a long haft, from the same family of shapes as 戌 and 戈. The Shang borrowed the sign for the fifth heavenly stem and kept only its sound. To tell it from 戌, look at the blade: on 戊 it is narrow and hugs the shaft, while 戌 is generally drawn with a broad, heavy blade.
