What is drawn here has more than one answer. 說文 says “屯 is difficulty; it pictures grass or a tree first coming up, coming hard … a 中 driven through a 一, and the 一 is the ground” — on that reading the crossbar is the ground line, the swelling is a shoot forcing its way out, and the character is read zhūn. A second reading takes the swelling for a tight knot and the stem for the two ends, the word later written 純, meaning a matched pair. Nothing on the bones separates the two, so the badge stays at probable. One thing worth saying plainly: the commonest place this character appears on the bones is not a question about crops but a record notation on a bone socket, counting how many pairs of shoulder blades someone had sent in — one pair written 一屯. It sits in this chapter for the shoot in the picture, not for how the divinations use the word.
