画的是两块，这没有疑问；两块是什么，读法不一。《说文》说“吕，脊骨也。象形”，又说“膂，篆文吕，从肉，从旅”——后来加“肉”写成“膂”，专指脊背，所以照《说文》，这两块是脊椎的骨节，一节摞一节。另一种读法把它们看作铸出来的金属块：铜料化开倒进模子，冷了就是这样方方的两饼，成组地摆着。两说各有道理：骨节确实一节一节，金属饼也确实成块；字形本身两边都不偏。金文里“吕”多见于人名、国名（如吕姜、吕侯），也帮不上判断。所以本条定为有争议。

That two blocks are drawn is not in doubt; what the two blocks are is read two ways. 說文 says “呂 is the spine bone; it is a picture”, and adds that “膂 is 呂 in seal script, from 肉 and 旅” — 肉, flesh, was added later to write the back, so on 說文's account these are vertebrae, one joint set on the next. The other reading takes them for cast blocks of metal: copper melted, poured into a mould, and cooling into just such flat squares, laid out in sets. Each account has something to stand on — vertebrae do come one after another, and cast metal does come in blocks — and the shape itself favours neither. In bronze the word is mostly a name, personal or territorial, as in 呂姜 and 呂侯, which does not decide it either. So we grade it disputed.
