字形本身没有疑问：两杆两档，上端外张，档间留空。有疑问的是这架子是什么。一种读法把它看作平口的盘：后来加“皿”写成“盘”，本章 glyph_circle_001（般）左边用的正是这个偏旁，手拿杆去拨的就是它。另一种读法把它看作扎起来的架子或筏子——两根长杆横着绑住，可以抬、可以浮。《说文》帮不上忙：“凡，最括也。从二。二，偶也。从ㄋ。ㄋ，古文及”——讲的是借来的那个虚词“总共”，而且根本不把它当象形字看。卜辞里这个字也多半用作虚词。所以本条定为有争议：两杆两档画得清楚，画的是什么器物没有定论。

The shape itself is not in doubt: two poles, two crossbars, the tops splaying, a gap left between the bars. What is in doubt is what the frame is. One reading takes it for a flat open vessel — 皿 was added later to write 盤, the basin — and it is this same element that stands on the left of 般 at glyph_circle_001, the thing the hand turns. The other reading takes it for a lashed frame or raft: two long poles tied across, something to carry with or to float on. 說文 is no help: “凡 is to sum up; from 二, which is a pair, and from ㄋ, the old form of 及” — that glosses the borrowed particle “altogether”, and does not treat the graph as a picture at all. On the bones too the word is mostly the particle. So we grade this one disputed: the poles and bars are plain, the object is not.
