“夙”由两部分合成：上面是一弯月牙，旁边是一个跪着的人，一只手张开手指往前伸。多数学者把它读作从“月”从“丮”，会月亮还没落就已经起身做事的意思，所以卜辞里用它指天没亮的清晨；赵诚则认为这个字形画的是拜月，卜辞里它用作祭名，当是拜月之祭。两说并存，所以这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。和“夕”分辨很容易：“夕”只有一弯月牙，“夙”的月牙旁边还跪着一个伸手的人。

Two parts make 夙: a crescent moon, and beside it a kneeling person with a hand stretched out, fingers spread. Most scholars read it as 月 with 丮 and take the sense to be that the moon has not yet set and work has already begun, which is why the divinations use the sign for the dark hours before dawn. 趙誠 reads the same shape as a person worshipping the moon, and points out that on the bones the graph is used as the name of a rite. Both readings are current, so the picture is graded probable. Telling it from 夕 is easy: 夕 is the crescent alone, while 夙 sets a kneeling person with an open hand beside it.
