外面那条弧线是坑壁，里面那个带杈的形体是掉下去的活物。有的写法掉下去的是兽，有的是一个弯着身子的人，这只是取材不同，坑加落物的结构没有变。小篆在左边加了“阜”，写成“陷”；《说文》讲“陷，高下也”，说的是从高处掉到低处。

The outer curve is the wall of the pit and the forked shape inside it is whatever has fallen in. Some cuttings put an animal down there and some a doubled-over human figure; that is a change of subject, not of structure — pit plus faller stays the same. The seal script adds 阜 on the left to make 陷, and 說文 explains it as “from high to low”.
