把“雈”和“隹”摆在一起，多出来的只有头顶那两撮毛。《说文》说“萑，鸱属。从隹，从𦫳，有毛角”，“毛角”就是猫头鹰头上竖起来的那两撮羽毛，不是真的角。这个字在甲骨里多半当偏旁用：在它的头下再添两只大眼睛，就是“雚”。要注意它和“萑”（芦苇的那个字）字形相近而来历不同，读音也不一样。

Set 雈 beside 隹 and the only addition is the pair of tufts on the head. 說文 says “萑 is of the owl kind; from 隹 and 𦫳, it has feather horns” — the “horns” being the standing feathers of an owl rather than horns of bone. On the bones the graph mostly serves as a component: put two large eyes under that head and the character is 雚. Note that it is close in shape to 萑, the word for reeds, which has a different origin and a different sound.
