把“行”的四条路岔从中间分开,中间那一竖换成“水”,就是“衍”。和“行”相比,中间多了一条弯弯的水流;和“水”相比,两旁多了路岔。两个部件本身没有疑问,合起来要表达什么则还没有定论:一般疑其会水漫到四通八达的路上、溢出泛滥之意。卜辞里的“衍”多用作地名、人名;《说文》说它是“水朝宗于海”,那是汉代人对字形的引申讲法。

Pull the four arms of 行 apart and set 水 down the middle, and you have 衍. Against 行 the addition is the winding stream between the arms; against 水 it is the road arms to either side. The two parts are not in doubt; what the combination was meant to convey is not settled, the usual suggestion being water spreading over roads that run in every direction, hence overflowing. On the bones 衍 is mostly a place or personal name; 說文's “waters paying court to the sea” is a Han-dynasty gloss on the shape.
