“洹”和“河”一样是形声字：水表示这是一条河，盘绕的“亘”表示读音。认它的窍门就是那个一圈套一圈的方旋涡。洹水从商都殷（今安阳小屯）旁边流过，卜辞里常问它会不会涨水。

Like 河, 洹 is a sound-plus-sense character: the water says it is a river and the coiled 亘 gives the pronunciation. The way to recognise it is that squared coil turning inside itself. The Huan ran past the Shang capital at Yin — today's Xiaotun in Anyang — and the divinations often ask whether it will flood.
