What this graph draws is still argued. One reading takes the lower part for a person and the upper for a load borne on the head or shoulder, which suits the sense “can carry it, can bring it off” and matches 說文's gloss 克，肩也 — “克 is to shoulder”. A second reading takes the top for a helmet and the figure beneath for the man wearing it. 說文 adds a third, “the shape of wood being carved under a roof”, but that is an account of the seal form: on the bones there is no roof and no knife. The use in the divinations is not in doubt — the formula 王其克… asks whether the king will manage a thing.
