The upper half is 壴, a drum standing on its foot, and that much is not in dispute. The box below is read by most as 口, a mouth, so that drum-sound plus voice comes out as gladness; others say it is the base-plate of the stand rather than a mouth. 說文 takes the first line: “喜 is 樂, joy; from 壴 and from 口.” Worth keeping in mind: how 喜 is to be read on the bones is unsettled, some taking it as “glad” and some reading it as 饎, a sacrifice of food and drink. What the graph draws is a drum and a mouth; “gladness” is a sense that settled on the character later.
