Set these forms beside 馬 and the difference is only that they are written shorter and faster: the mane comes down to two or three ticks, the body to one long upright, the eye to a small ring. 甲骨文編 files them under 驟 and collects fourteen, most from the 賓組 divinations; but on shape alone they are hard to keep apart from an abbreviated 馬, which is why this entry is graded as a likely reading rather than a settled one. What matters first is to see that this is a horse, and then to see how fast it was cut. The 驟 of 說文 is already a phonetic compound: “驟, a horse at a quick step; 馬 with 聚 for the sound” — and “a horse at a quick step” is exactly what the word means.
