Set it beside 鹿: there the antlers spread and fork, here a single short prong stands on the head and the body is drawn small. The bones carry a whole family of deer graphs — 鹿, 麋, 麑 each have their own shapes — and which shape should be read as which deer name is not agreed, so filing this one under 麑 is the arrangement of 甲骨文編 rather than a settled fact. The word has two readings too: in later usage 麑 is a fawn, while 說文 says “麑 is the 狻麑 beast; 鹿 with 兒 for the sound”, making it a lion-like animal. This entry follows the fawn, because what the graph draws is a small deer whose antler has not yet branched.
