上下两道线是“二”，中间那一弯是“月”。这一弯是什么，有两种说法：一说就是月亮，月亮一轮一轮地圆缺回来，总在那两道线之间，所以拿它写“长久不变”；一说依《说文》，把它看成一只舟——“恆，常也。从心，从舟，在二之閒上下”。不过《说文》自己也记下“古文恆从月”，还引《诗》“如月之恆”，而甲骨上画的正是月不是舟。所以“舟”那一说，多半是小篆字形走样以后才有的解释。卜辞里的这个字多见于人名。

The two lines are 二, and the curve between them is the moon. What that curve is gets two answers. One says the moon plainly: the moon comes round again and again and is always back between those two lines, so it writes what lasts unchanged. The other follows 說文, which sees a boat — “恆 is 常, constant; from 心 and from 舟, between the two lines, above and below.” But 說文 itself also records that “the old form of 恆 is written with 月”, and quotes the 詩 line “like the waxing of the moon”; and what the bones draw is a moon, not a boat. The boat reading is most likely an explanation invented after the small-seal shape had drifted. On the bones the character is common in personal names.
