甲骨文“栗”是在树的枝头画上果实：栗子外面裹着一层带刺的苞，所以这几个果实常画成带尖的小圈。《说文》从另一个角度讲，说它“从木，其实下垂”，还收了一个从“西”的古文写法。和“采”比，“栗”的树上没有手；和“枼”比，枝头挂的是圆的果苞，不是尖的叶片。

Oracle-bone 栗 puts fruit at the tips of a tree: a chestnut sits inside a spiny husk, so the fruits are usually drawn as small rings with points on them. 說文 comes at it from another angle — 「从木，其實下垂」, a tree whose fruit hangs down — and also records an old form written with 西. Against 采 there is no hand in the tree; against 枼 what hangs at the tips is a round husk, not a pointed leaf.
