甲骨的“禽”画的是一张长柄的网：上面网兜，下面握柄，柄上一道横是手抓的地方。网兜有时张成口袋形，有时刻成方框，网眼都用交叉的两道斜画表示。卜辞里“禽”是动词，意思是捕获，田猎的记录常问“其禽”，问这一趟能不能有收获；这个意思后来另写作“擒”，“禽”才让给了飞鸟。《说文》看到的小篆已经添了声符“今”，所以说“禽，走兽总名。从 ，象形，今声”，把它讲成走兽的总名；甲骨上没有“今”，只有网和柄两样。

On the bones 禽 draws a net with a long handle: the bag above, the shaft below, and a bar across the shaft where the hand takes hold. The bag is sometimes a pouch, sometimes a square frame, and the mesh is always two crossed slants. In the divinations 禽 is a verb meaning to take, and hunting records ask 其禽 — will there be a catch on this trip. That sense was later written 擒, leaving 禽 to the birds. The seal shape 說文 knew had already taken on the phonetic 今, so it says “禽 is the general name for running beasts; from 厹, a picture, with 今 for the sound”. The bones have no 今 in it at all — only a net and a handle.
