At the centre stands 大, a front-facing figure with its arms out; a matched group of marks sits at each side, and on that much everyone agrees. What the marks draw is where the readings part: one takes them for ornaments hung on the body, another for the openings of a woven screen with light coming through. 說文 calls 爽 “bright” and analyses it as 大 with 㸚, a doubled 爻; that is a Han reading, not a note left by the Shang. On the bones 爽 turns up mostly inside names of people and places, and the abstract sense “clear, bright” only stands firm in later books.
