豭 adds one short stroke under the belly of 豕, a drawing of the male organ; it is the same device as 牡, where a post stands beside the ox. The bones give very little of this character — 甲骨文編 collects only five forms, and only one of them can be placed in a 類組 — so its range of shapes barely shows. 說文 records it as “豭, a male pig; 豕 with 叚 for the sound”: by then the short stroke had been replaced by a phonetic. The bronze forms that 金文編 files under 豭 are a different shape again: a pig written under a roof, the same graph that is read 家, and found mostly in clan inscriptions. The bronze stage here is drawn after one of those.
