The lower half is 大, a person standing face-on, and that is clear. What the ornament above is gets two answers: a head-dress made of a ram's head or horns, which is the line 說文 takes with “美 is 甘, sweet; from 羊 and from 大”; or feathers set in the hair and worn for dancing and for rites. Both agree that the graph shows a person carrying something on the head; they differ only over whether that something is sheep or plume. Examples of the word on the bones are few and are read in more than one way, and “fine, beautiful” as a word of judgement only comes out clearly in later books.
