A tree: one straight trunk, two branches opening at a slant above, two roots sweeping out below. Beside it, or under it, runs a stroke that turns back on itself three times, like a cord folded to and fro — that is 己.

The character explained

This is a sound-and-sense compound, and already one on the bones: 木 carries the sense, telling us the word names a tree, and 己 carries the sound. That folded stroke is in itself the sixth of the ten stems, but here it means nothing — it is borrowed for its sound alone. So the way into this character is to find the stroke with three folds first, then check whether a tree stands next to it. 說文 says “杞 is the goji; from 木 with 己 as the sound”, meaning the shrub still called 枸杞 today. On the bones, though, the word is a place name — the place 杞, which later became a Zhou state. Which tree the Shang meant by it is not visible on the bones; the goji identification comes from 說文.
