The opening faces whichever way the carver chose: left in some forms, right in others, upward in others again. Some forms draw a second outline inside the first, so the wall doubles. What is drawn is a vessel from the side: a floor, two walls, and the third face left off so you can see in. 說文 says “匚 is a vessel for receiving things; it is a picture; read like 方.” The shape is not in dispute; whether it is a vessel is. The other reading takes the square for an enclosure — a ring drawn round whatever sign is set inside it, not an object at all but the act of closing something in. The bone forms will bear either: some squares are empty, and some have a second ring drawn within. We take the vessel reading, but not as certain. The direction of the opening does not change the character: carvers turned it left, right or up as the space allowed, and what identifies it is the structure of three walls and one open side.
