字是“人”夹在“二”当中。那两道线是什么，有两种说法：一说依《说文》——“亟，敏疾也。从人，从口，从又，从二。二，天地也”——上是天，下是地，人顶天立地，撑到两头，所以有“到头、到顶”的意思，这个意思后来专门写成“极”。一说那两道是屋子的地面和脊檩，人站在梁下，量的是屋脊的高处，“极”本来就指屋脊。两说都从“撑到两头”上讲，分歧只在那两道线画的是天地还是屋子。《说文》提到的“口”和“又”（嘴和手），甲骨字形里还没有，要到西周金文才加上去；“急、赶紧”这层意思，多半就是跟着嘴和手一起来的。

The character is 人 held inside 二. What the two lines are gets two answers. One follows 說文 — “亟 is quickness; from 人, from 口, from 又 and from 二; the two are heaven and earth” — sky above, ground below, a person braced between them and reaching both, which gives the sense of the far end, later written with its own character 極. The other makes the lines the floor and the ridgepole of a house, the person standing under the beam, since 極 first meant a roof-ridge. Both read it as reaching from end to end, and differ only over whether the lines draw a world or a room. The 口 and 又 — a mouth and a hand — that 說文 names are not in the bone graph at all; they are added in Western Zhou bronze writing, and the sense “urgent, in haste” most likely arrives with them.
