右边那件带尖顶的东西是“余”，本来画的是一根柱子撑起的尖顶棚子。“木”说这是一种树，“余”只管读音，所以这又是一个形声字。“余”底下画不画那个圆，柱上横不横那一道，各版都不一样，不影响认字：认准“尖顶加一根柱”，再看它左边立着的是不是一棵树。这个字在甲骨上出得多——《甲骨文编》收了二十一形，比本章多数字都多，用法一般读作地名。至于“梌”指哪一种树，卜辞说不了；《说文》在小學堂的资料库里也没有收这个字头，所以本条“小篆”一格不是摹自某个小篆字形，而是按“木”和“余”两个部件的小篆拼出来的，只供看演变的势头。

The pointed thing on the right is 余, which draws a gabled shelter held up on one post. 木 says the word names a tree and 余 carries only the sound, so this is another sound-and-sense compound. Whether a circle is drawn under the cover, and whether a bar crosses the post, changes from copy to copy and does not affect reading it: fix on “a peak over one post”, then check that a tree stands to its left. The character is well represented on the bones — 甲骨文編 gathers twenty-one copies, more than most characters in this chapter — and the word is generally read as a place name. Which tree 梌 named, the divinations cannot say. 說文 is not held for this headword in the 小學堂 database either, so the seal panel here is not copied from any attested small-seal 梌: it is assembled from the small-seal forms of its two parts, 木 and 余, and is offered only to show the direction of the change.
