“丁”是十天干的第四位。多数古文字学者认为它画的是钉子的帽——从上往下看只见一个圆或方的小面，后来加上竖杆才写成“钉”。《说文》另有一说，从阴阳讲“夏时万物皆丁实”，那是汉代的解释。钉帽说明显占多数，所以标为较可能。它的轮廓和“日”“口”很像，分别全在里面：“日”有一横或一点，“口”的开口在上，“丁”里面空空的。
「丁」是十天干的第四位。多數古文字學者認為它畫的是釘子的帽——從上往下看只見一個圓或方的小面，後來加上豎桿才寫成「釘」。《說文》另有一說，從陰陽講「夏時萬物皆丁實」，那是漢代的解釋。釘帽說明顯佔多數，所以標為較可能。它的輪廓和「日」「口」很像，分別全在裡面：「日」有一橫或一點，「口」的開口在上，「丁」裡面空空的。
The fourth heavenly stem. Most palaeographers read it as the head of a nail seen from directly above — a bare round or square face, to which the shaft was added later to write 釘. The Shuowen offers a different, yin-and-yang account, but that is a Han-dynasty explanation. The nail reading clearly leads, hence the yellow badge. The outline is close to 日 and 口, and the difference is all inside: 日 carries a bar or dot, 口 opens at the top, 丁 is empty.
