說文's account of this character fits the oracle form closely: “耑 is the head of a thing first growing; above pictures the growth, below its root.” The upper half is new leaf, the lower half is root — a seedling lifted with its root still on. 題 means the head or the tip, which is why the word later took 立 and became 端, a tip or a beginning. What the two specks beside the stalk are is not agreed: some read them as clods of earth lifted with the root, some as fallen seed, and whether they appear at all, and how high, varies from copy to copy. The character is not common on the bones — 甲骨文編 gathers seven copies — and where it occurs it reads as a name rather than as a report on how a crop is doing.
