“麓”上面取“鹿”，只留角、长脸和眼睛；下面取“林”，两棵树。和单写的“林”比一比，多出来的正是头上那对张开的角。《说文》把“麓”讲成“守山林的官”，又说“林属于山为麓”，后一句才贴近卜辞里的用法——商王田猎的山林。

麓 takes 鹿 above — just the antlers, the long face and the eye — and 林 below, two trees. Set it beside plain 林 and the addition is exactly that spreading pair of antlers. 說文 glosses 麓 as “the officer who guards hill and forest”, and adds “woodland belonging to a hill is a 麓”; it is the second gloss that matches how the bones use the word, for the hill woods the king hunted in.
