甲骨文“彭”一边是“壴”，一面立在架子上的鼓，鼓顶还插着装饰；另一边两三道斜斜的短画，就是鼓声。声音本来看不见，商人就用几道短画把它画了出来。《说文》说“彭，鼓声也，从壴、彡声”。和“鼓”比一比：“鼓”旁边是一只举着槌子的手，“彭”旁边是几道声音。
甲骨文「彭」一邊是「壴」，一面立在架子上的鼓，鼓頂還插著裝飾；另一邊兩三道斜斜的短畫，就是鼓聲。聲音本來看不見，商人就用幾道短畫把它畫了出來。《說文》說「彭，鼓聲也，从壴、彡聲」。和「鼓」比一比：「鼓」旁邊是一隻舉著槌子的手，「彭」旁邊是幾道聲音。
Oracle-bone 彭 puts 壴, a drum standing on its frame with an ornament on top, next to two or three short slanting strokes — the sound. Sound cannot be drawn, so the Shang scribes cut it as strokes leaving the drum. 《說文》 glosses 彭 as the sound of a drum, from 壴 with 彡 for sound. Set it beside 鼓: there a hand holds a beater, here the strokes are the noise.
