Early 午 is a shaft with two spindle-shaped swellings. Most scholars read it as the pestle used to husk grain, the swellings being where the shaft thickens; others take them for knots tied in a rope and read the sign as a length of cord or a horse rein, which is how it works inside 御. The pestle reading is the one most often cited, hence the yellow badge. Later 午 thins to an upright with one bar and a single swelling left low on the shaft, which brings it close to 七, written as a cross; that swelling is what separates them.
