Most palaeographers read 辰 as a clam-shell blade lashed to a handle. Shang farmers cut grain with big shells, which is why 辰 also sits inside 農. Others take it for a different stone farming tool. The Shuowen explains it through the sound and the seasons, a Han-dynasty account. The shell-blade reading leads, hence the yellow badge. The Shang used 辰 as the fifth earthly branch.
