“岳”的甲骨文比“山”多出上面那层尖峰。上半部分怎么解释，学界有两种说法：多数学者认为它就是重叠的山峰，画的是高，《说文》所收的古文“岳”正被解作“象高形”；另一种说法认为上面是“羊”，只用来标读音。前一种说法目前占上风。卜辞里商王常向“岳”求雨，可见它是受祭的山。

Oracle-bone 岳 is 山 with an extra crest piled on top. What that upper part is has two readings: most scholars take it as repeated peaks, a picture of height — and the old form 岳 preserved in 說文 is glossed there as “a picture of height” — while others read it as 羊, added only for the sound. The first reading currently leads. In the divinations the king asks 岳 for rain, so this is a mountain that received offerings.
