甲骨文“月”作半月形，多数写法是空心的一弯，有的在内部加一短竖。它和“夕”（夜晚）用的是同一个形体，靠有没有那一短竖来分辨；究竟哪一个加竖，不同时期的刻手并不一致，所以还要看辞例。

Oracle-bone 月 is a crescent; most attested forms are a plain hollow sliver and some add a short stroke inside. It shares its shape with 夕 (evening), and the inner stroke is what tells them apart — but which of the two carries it changes from period to period, so the context has the last word.
