商代的“四”还是四道横画，和一、二、三一脉相承。后来它被另一个形体取代——一个方框里加两笔，就是今天写的“四”；这个形体一般认为本来是另一个字（写鼻子出气的“呬”），被借来记数字四。在这组数字里，它的字形变化最大。

In Shang times 四 was still four bars, straight on from one, two and three. Later it was replaced by a different shape — a box with two strokes inside — which is the 四 we write now; that shape is generally taken to have been another character altogether, 呬 "to breathe out", borrowed for the number. It changed more than any other number in the set.
