“未”和“木”用的是同一个底子，分别在枝：“木”的主干上只有一层枝，“未”上面叠了两层，画的是枝叶最盛的树。商人借这个字的读音，用它做十二地支的第八位，和“午”“申”排在一起记日。

Under 未 is the same skeleton as 木; the difference is in the branches. 木 carries one tier on its trunk, 未 stacks two, drawing a tree at its fullest. The Shang borrowed the sound and used the sign as the eighth earthly branch, standing between 午 and 申 in the day count.
