“下”和“上”共用一套笔画，全靠短画的位置分开：短画在上读“上”，在下读“下”。长画多刻成向上拱的弧，像一片天盖着，短画就在天底下。卜辞里“下”常用来说神灵“降下”什么，例如降雨、降祸。小篆在长画下面加一竖，写成“丅”，两个字从此再不会看错。

下 and 上 are cut from the same two strokes and are separated only by where the short one sits: above the long stroke it reads 上, below it reads 下. The long stroke is usually arched, like a sky spread overhead with the short mark under it. In the divinations 下 often says that the spirits sent something down — rain, or harm. The small seal dropped a vertical below the long stroke to give 丅, and the two signs could no longer be taken for each other.
