“上”不画东西，只画位置，这种字叫指事字。卜辞里它和“下”是一对：同样两笔，短画在长画之上读“上”，在长画之下读“下”。两笔常常刻成弯的，像一道河岸或一片天。真正要分清的是“二”——“二”的两笔一样长，“上”的两笔一长一短。到小篆，为了不再混，中间竖起一笔，写成“丄”。

上 draws no object at all, only a position; signs like this are called indicative. In the divinations it works as a pair with 下: the same two strokes, read 上 when the short one is above the long one and 下 when it is below. Both strokes are often cut with a curve, like a riverbank or a stretch of sky. The one to keep apart is 二, whose two strokes are the same length, while 上 always has one long and one short. The small seal finally stood a vertical up between them, giving 丄.
